Jennifer Lawrence Says Mentioning Donald Trump Would ‘Add Fuel to a Fire’ Tearing the Country Apart
Lawrence has expressed that she believes it's no longer suitable to speak out against the Trump government, fearing it could intensify divisive discussions and increase separation within the country.
‘I’m Unsure If It’s Wise’, Notes Jennifer Lawrence
In a recent interview, she commented, “During the first Trump administration, I believed I was running around like a chicken with my head cut off. But as we’ve learned, through repeated campaigns, public figures fail to influence in any way on voter decisions.”
The actor went on, “Why continue? I’m just sharing my opinion on something that’s going to add fuel to a fire dividing the nation apart.”
Changing Allegiances
The actress has previously been open about backing Republican and Democratic presidential nominees throughout her life. Growing up with conservative Republicans in Kentucky, she cast her ballot for John McCain in the 2008 election before joining the Democratic party and explaining she recognized during President Obama’s term that backing conservatives was opposing her own rights as a woman.
Earlier Remarks
Earlier in her career, she remarked that a Trump victory could represent “the end of the world” and publicly supported the Democratic candidate in the 2020 presidential race. More recently, she voiced her backing to Vice President Harris, “because I think she’s an excellent choice and I know that she will take all necessary steps to protect reproductive rights.”
Celebrity Views
Lawrence was aligned with most of Hollywood in her rejection of the former president as a presidential contender, but the lack of leverage celebrities have over the voting intentions was emphasized by Trump’s victory.
“This upcoming term feels different,” commented Lawrence about his administration. “As he made his plans clear. We knew what he did for his first term. He was transparent. And voters made that decision.”
New Release
Jennifer Lawrence is currently promoting her new film, Lynne Ramsay’s project in which she stars as a young mom who deals with her emotional state in the countryside. Speaking at a media event for the project in Venice, she addressed the situation in the Middle East: “I’m terrified. It’s devastating. What’s happening is nothing short of a humanitarian crisis and it’s awful.”
Additional Thoughts
The actress elaborated by saying that she was disheartened by “the lack of civility in the conversations of the political landscape currently and how that is going to be normalised to the kids now. It’s going to be standard to them that politicians lie.”
She attempted to refocus anger about the situation to decision-makers rather than celebrities. “Stay focused on who is responsible,” she advised, seen by observers as a nod to the then-recent pledge supported by thousands of Hollywood professionals to avoid Israeli film institutions.
Individual Insights
Lawrence, who earned critical acclaim at a young age for her role in her breakout movie, is receiving praise for her performance in the new film. While Lynne Ramsay has disputed the story being understood as one of postpartum depression and psychosis, she shared that she connected with aspects of her film narrative after the delivery of her new baby, shortly after shooting ended.
“I felt anxiety for my son,” she commented, “imagining every worst-case scenario, and then second-guessing everything that I was attempting. I was seeing a therapist, but I got on a drug called the prescription and I used it for a short period and it was effective.”
Film Challenges
The actor also spoke of the freeing requirement of completing nude scenes in the project while she was in pregnancy and unable to exercise.
“There’s a freedom,” she said, of being forced to set aside self-consciousness. “Honestly, I sometimes think where I’m like, How exactly do I differ between me and a prostitute? But it isn’t a major concern.”
