Gas Detonation Costs 3 Police Officers Amid Property Removal Procedure in Northern Italy
A trio of officers perished and more than a dozen additional individuals got wounded in a seemingly deliberate blast caused by gas at a country home in the northern part of Italy.
Sequence of Events
The blast was triggered as officers and emergency crews approached the property in the vicinity of the Verona region to execute an eviction order for three siblings who were older adults.
Each of the three deceased individuals were members of the Italian military police.
Investigation Developments
A man and a woman were taken into custody at the scene and a third person who ran away following the explosion was apprehended shortly later. The trio have been admitted to medical facility.
The blast could be noticed some 5km (3 miles) away and images from the area showed the property reduced to a pile of rubble.
“This is a time for grieving,” commented the Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who noted that efforts had been made to displace the brother and sister trio in the past.
Property Situation
The president of the region of Veneto, the regional head, explained the farmhouse was facing an removal notice due to debts accumulated by the siblings.
Negotiators had been sent to speak to the family members who had secured themselves into the house. When the police reached the location shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities believe one of the residents triggered the explosion.
“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” regional commander the police commander informed the media.
A propane tank had been ignited, and the explosion immediately struck our members,” he said.
Molotov cocktails were also discovered at the property, the interior minister said.
Impact Assessment
The wounded by the blast comprised an additional 11 personnel of the Carabinieri as well as three members of national police and a firefighter.
As stated by the Verona prosecutor, the building was in a poor condition and had was without power.
He was convinced the blast had taken place on a level above the doorway and told reporters it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Moments before the explosion, he said officers had “detected a whistling noise, probably the gas cylinders being opened”.
Community Reaction
“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” local residents told reporters, noting that the family members had in the past stated to “detonate the property” rather than leave the house.
“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”
The Defense Minister Minister Crosetto joined other political leaders in honoring the three men who had lost their lives in the service of their country.
